GHS Science Teacher Named Illinois Outstanding Earth Science Teacher! image GHS Science Teacher Named Illinois Outstanding Earth Science Teacher!
Geneva High School Science teacher Joe Schoen was selected as the National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT) Illinois Outstanding Earth Science Teacher for 2015! Outstanding Earth Science Teacher (OEST) awards are given for "exceptional contributions to the stimulation of interest in the Earth Sciences at the pre-college level." The selection committee says it was particularly impressed with Mr. Schoen’s implementation of "curriculum choice", his ability to inspire his students, and his passion for earth science education.

Math Olympiad Students Williamsburg Students Excel in Math Olympiad Program

Several 5th grade students from Williamsburg Elementary School were among the approximately 120,000 students worldwide to take part in this years’ Math Olympiad program. They participated in a series of five monthly contests consisting of five problems each. During class they also practiced for these meets under the supervision and coaching of Nancy Krasinski, Acceleration and Enrichment teacher at Williamsburg.

Oh Là Là! GHS received the award for Exemplary French Program, with honors, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. This speaks to the incredible talent and commitment of our French teachers at the high school, Pam Cabeen and Martha Behlow, as well as our French I teacher, Lynn Freedlund, at the middle schools. Their program was commended for their consistently good numbers, their numerous activities with students, their trips abroad with students, their professional involvement, and their excellent letters of support. When Jillian was born, her pediatrician noticed her heart did not sound like other babies but they were unable to determine the problem. She came back for a checkup when she was 3 and found that her heart was enlarged and there was a hole called an ASD- Atrial Septal Defect.

GHS Places 5th Nationally in Student Television Competition image GHS Places 5th Nationally in Student Television Competition

Over spring break, 18 GHS students traveled to San Diego to compete in the Student Television Network (STN) annual convention. At home, the students are part of GTV, GHS’ student-run broadcasting network, a program that supports and encourages scholastic broadcasting. GTV sponsor Jason Santo says the students worked tirelessly over several months to prepare for two team and 15 individual competitions.

The GTV news team placed 5th in the nation in the Crazy 8 competition, which requires students to shoot, edit, and anchor a newscast all in 8 hours. “GHS has never placed in this competition, and to finish in the top 5 was an amazing feat,” said Santo.

The students carried themselves professionally and asked thoughtful questions that really allowed the audience to get to know the candidates better. Congratulations to the staff of the 2014 Literary Magazine, The Skaldic: Ergo on achieving the Highest Award in the 2014 National Council of Teachers of English Program to Recognize Excellence in Student Literary Magazines. A total of 417 schools entered the program, and Geneva’s Magazine tied with DeKalb High School as the number one magazine in the state.

American Education Week provided the perfect backdrop for the Geneva Academic Foundation to make a large donation to Geneva’s public education system. With a check for $34,869.36, the Geneva Academic Foundation provided the means to fund a number of grants for teacher classrooms in order to enrich the educational experience of Geneva’s students. From primate skulls for science classrooms to computers in various buildings, the wide variety of grants funded by this generous donation are sure to be appreciated by Geneva’s students and staff.
 
GHS Coach Estabrook named “Soccer Person of the Year” image GHS Coach Estabrook named “Soccer Person of the Year”

Ryan Estabrook, Head Coach of the GHS Varsity Boys Soccer Team, was selected as the 2014 recipient of the “Soccer Person of the Year” award from the Illinois High School Soccer Coaches Association. The Soccer Person of the Year is the association’s highest honor. Congratulations, Coach Estabrook, on this accomplishment!

In Coach Estabrook’s nomination write-up, Neuqua Valley head coach Skip Begley said: “Ryan Estabrook is an outstanding candidate for IHSSCA Soccer Person of the Year. Ryan is a role model for coaches both on and off the field. Ryan is a true professional in his interpersonal relationships with players, coaches, officials and fans. He is confident, calm and composed as he deals with game management and tactics. His teams are always well prepared and top performers against strong competition both in and out of the conference. His teams are extremely competitive but not at the exclusion of good sportsmanship at all times. His Geneva teams have received the Sportsmanship award for his Section numerous times and were state finalists to receive the IHSSCA Myro Rys award in 2012 …”

On the second day of a one-week food drive, the Heartland Elementary School food “bank” was already overflowing with donations for the First Baptist Church of Geneva’s food pantry. From November 12-19, the Heartland Elementary School Student Council collected hundreds of canned goods and other non-perishable items for the food pantry in a large cardboard safe in the cafeteria. Each item brought in earned the donating student a raffle ticket, and at an all school assembly on Friday, raffle tickets were drawn, giving selected students the chance to shoot a basket and win a $25 gift card. There were six student winners in total.

As school and community leaders listened intently, student government representatives from Geneva’s nine schools spoke about their efforts to be leaders in their schools and their community. In recognition of American Education Week and a celebration of public education, community service, and leadership, these remarkable students detailed the many ways they help others, celebrate school spirit, and set a good example for their peers. “Kids can do a lot,” one said. “We consider ourselves role models for our peers,” another said. And a group of particularly lively elementary students yelled, “Leader means YOU!”

Kindergartners from Heartland Elementary School recently completed a “sweet” community service project, when they put together a total of 363 Halloween goody bags for cancer patients at Living Well Cancer Resource Center in Geneva. The students carefully counted various candies including gum, mints, Tootsie Pops, Jolly Ranchers, and Lifesavers to pack in their Halloween goody bags, some of which included a note reading, “A Sweet Treat Just for You! Love, A Kindergarten Friend at Heartland Elementary School.”

Heartland Elementary Students Raise $3,400 for Marklund image Heartland Elementary Students Raise $3,400 for Marklund

Heartland Elementary School and the Kids with Heart PTO Committee raised more than $3,400 for Marklund during the 12th annual Run From the Heart on October 16. Run From the Heart is a charity event where the students participate in a kids’ dash and/or one mile fun run while donating 100% of the registration money to a local charity. This year’s charity – as voted on by the Heartland student body – was Marklund, a nonprofit organization that serves infants, children, teens and adults with serious and profound developmental disabilities and special healthcare needs. Several Marklund residents and their care-givers participated with 180 Heartland students in the Run From the Heart, which raised a total of $3,448.50.

Geneva High School is proud to announce that six seniors were recently named National Merit Scholarship Commended in the 2015 National Merit Scholarship Program. The six students – Scott Gies, Emma Hazel, Thomas Miller, Laura Neswold, Courtney Reynolds, and Rachael Valiunas – placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2015 competition by taking the 2013 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Congratulations to these students on their accomplishment!

The Geneva Middle School South cross country team had an outstanding day Saturday at the Troy Invite, which included more than 40 schools. The 6th and 7th grade boys put on awesome displays of running, with both teams placing 1st and winning trophies that are now on display at the school. Congratulations to our cross country runners!
 
GHS Admins Raise $1,400 for ALS Research image GHS Admins Raise $1,400 for ALS Research

What a refreshing act it is to raise a total of $1,420.41 for ALS research in ONE DAY! Oh, and to have buckets of ice water dumped on your head; that’s “refreshing” too!

The Geneva High School Administrative Team blew their $1,000 fundraising goal out of the water on Wednesday after accepting a challenge by the Batavia High School administration to participate in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. In recent weeks, the challenge has become a social media craze aimed at raising awareness of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also called Lou Gehrig’s disease) and funds for ALS research.

The GHS administrative team, all of whom took part in the challenge, includes: Principal Tom Rogers; Associate Principal Doug Drexler; Assistant Principal Scott McPeak; Deans Susan Shrader, Mike Kelly and Reed Allison; and Athletic Director Jim Kafer.

Two exceptional educators are celebrating 25 years in Geneva School District this school year! Congratulations to Geneva High School teachers Sue Khalaieff and Kevin Gannon on this accomplishment! In addition to teaching science and serving as Science Department Chair, Kevin Gannon has coached high school baseball and basketball and most recently the high school’s World-wide Youth in Science and Engineering Team. In addition to teaching social studies, Sue Khalaieff has served as Social Studies/World Languages Department Chair and Model UN Sponsor.
