Geneva High School Reaffirms Commitment To Civic Learning
Geneva Community Unit School District 304 and the Illinois Civic Mission Coalition are proud to announce that Geneva High School has completed the recommitment process for the Illinois Democracy Schools Initiative. This distinction commemorates 10 years of fostering a school climate that cultivates and models civic dispositions and builds strong relationships with the surrounding community.
Since 2006, 67 Illinois high schools have successfully completed a school-wide civic assessment to be recognized as Democracy Schools. Geneva High School, one of the original Democracy Schools, has been vigilant about creating opportunities and experiences that empower students to nurture and sustain our democracy, including engaging in current and controversial issue discussions, participating in democratic simulations, and providing service learning opportunities in the community. Geneva High School is one of only four schools in the state of Illinois to complete the recertification process.
“As a public school district, we have no greater charge than the preparation of our students for their roles as active, engaged, and productive citizens in our democracy,” said Geneva CUSD 304 Assistant Superintendent of Learning and Teaching Dr. Andrew Barrett. “We are proud of this distinction, which reinforces the goals of our District vision and reaffirms our commitment to this vital responsibility,” added Barrett, who served along with members of the GHS faculty on the recertification team facilitated by Library Director Elizabeth Grubaugh and Social Studies Teacher Susan Nagle.
“We commend Geneva High School for their tenacity and enthusiasm in expanding and improving civic learning across the curriculum and throughout Illinois,” said Sonia Mathew, Civic Learning Manager at the Robert R. McCormick Foundation. “Though these practices and experiences, students see firsthand the critical role they play in shaping government and society."
