The friends and former colleagues of John Barton are planning the 2nd Annual golf outing to benefit the “Jimmy V Foundation” for cancer research and a local family in need. John was a teacher and coach at Geneva Community High School for more than thirty years. John was inspired by Jim Valvano who coached basketball at North Carolina State University and died of cancer in 1993. John admired Jimmy V’s slogan, “Don’t give up…Don’t ever give up!” and lived by those words until his own battle with cancer ended in 2012.
The outing is a great opportunity to connect with GHS alumni and past and present Geneva Community Unit School District #304 colleagues. John’s wife, Val Barton taught at Western Avenue School for many years, John’s sister Lil Sargent is a retired Western Avenue School teacher and John’s sister-in-law, Barb Freeman is a teacher at Western Avenue School.
