Each year, students across Geneva CUSD 304 participate in a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 150,000 participants. The WordMasters Challenge™ is an exercise in critical thinking that holds three meets each year. The following are students who have been recognized from the third and final meet of the 2018-19 WordMasters Challenge™ program.
Fabyan Elementary School: Competing in the very
difficult Gold Division, fourth-grader Sasha Costello earned a perfect score of
20; nationally, only 55 fourth-graders achieved this result. Other students
from Fabyan who achieved outstanding results include fourth-grader Melanie
Goodfellow.
Geneva Middle School
North: The eighth-grade team scored an impressive 192 points out of a possible 200 in this meet, placing second in the nation. The eight-graders also placed second nationally in the overall competition, with a cumulative score of 569 points out of 600. Competing in the difficult Blue Division, eighth-graders Molly Cowett and Matt Gariti each earned a perfect score of 20. Nationally, only 25 eighth-graders achieved this result. Other students from North who achieved outstanding results include eighth-graders Kody Clarke, Carter Cook, Caitlin Gallagher, John Henderson, Gino Ianno, OJ Julian, Luke Perrotta, and Pablo Zamora.
Harrison Street Elementary School: Competing
in the very difficult Gold Division, fourth-grader Lucas Meyers and
fifth-grader Mack Biesk each earned a perfect score of 20; nationally, only 55
fourth-graders and 134 fifth-graders achieved this result. Other students from
Harrison who achieved outstanding results include fourth-graders Will Brown,
Tessa Helfer, and Joey Swanson, and fifth-grader Ellie Haberthur. Biesk also
earned Individual Highest Honors in the overall competition with a cumulative
score of 60 out of a possible 60 points. Highest Honors are reserved for
students who place among the top 10-15 students in their division.
Mill Creek Elementary
School: Competing in the very
difficult Gold Division, fifth-graders John Chang, Kirill Lunin, and Kyle Sugar
each earned a perfect score of 20; nationally, only 134 fifth-graders achieved
this result. Other students from Mill Creek who achieved outstanding results
include third-graders Mathew Haughan, Brooke Lisle, and Peyton Weiss, and
fifth-grader Ethan Ellis. Haughan also earned Individual Highest Honors in the
overall competition with a cumulative score of 56 out of 60 points. Highest
Honors are reserved for students who place among the top 10-15 students in
their division.
Western Avenue School: Competing in the very
difficult Gold Division, fourth-grader Andrew Lee earned a cumulative score of
58 out of 60 points. Highest Honors are reserved for students who place among
the top 10-15 students in their division.
Williamsburg Elementary School: Competing in the very
difficult Gold Division, third-grader Albert Pavlovic and fourth-grader Gianna
Oxler each earned a perfect score of 20. Nationally, only 15 third-graders and
55 fourth-graders achieved this result. Other Williamsburg students who achieved
outstanding results include fourth-grader Rex Pomaro and fifth-graderes Cate
Costello, Evan Jarot, Gabe Schwab, Cole Steben, and Lucy Webster. Pavlovic also
earned Individual Highest Honors with a cumulative score of 56 out of 60. Honors
are reserved for students who place among the top 10-15 students in their
division.
