Geneva 5th Graders Outwit Math Olympiad

5th Graders Pose with Prize from Math Olympiad

Ms. Villwock’s 5th grade Advanced/Enrichment students at Heartland Elementary School participate in a national math competition called Math Olympiad. This year, when working on follow-up problems, they confidently solved a problem, but their answer did not match the answer provided. The students told Ms. Villwock that they disagreed with the answer and explained their thinking. Ms. Villwock believed the students to be correct, so she wrote an email to Math Olympiad that explained her students’ reasoning and asked them to review the answer provided. The students were anxious for a reply, and they got one! It turns out, the students were correct! The Executive Director of Math Olympiad was so impressed that the students figured out the mistake that he sent them all Math Olympiad bendy pens to say "thank you". We are so proud of our creative and self-directed learners and thinkers!
