Geneva Orchestra Students to Share Gift of Music From Safe Distance

April 30, 2020

Music is a gift to both the player and the listener —  even from a safe distance.

At 2:00 p.m. this Friday, Geneva 304 orchestra students will step outside onto their individual porches, yards, or driveways to perform a “Springtime Serenade.” All Geneva 304 orchestra students in grades 5-12 have been invited to participate. The local community is welcome to enjoy the music within earshot, while practicing safe social distancing.

The idea, which stemmed from local violin teacher Fran Fatta - who also works with GHS students - is to bring some joy to our families and neighbors from a safe distance, said GHS Orchestra Director Julie Lawrence.

“We were hoping to give the kids something positive even our younger students can contribute from home, using the skills they have, so that they can feel a little less powerless right now,” Lawrence said.

Students are looking for an opportunity to express the caring they have and, in the spirit of the District’s Vision, they want to reach out to share the joy and healing power of music to everyone within earshot – “in a way that respects our current need for appropriate social distancing,” Lawrence added.

Families and students are reminded to practice safe social distancing practices. Those who take photos or videos of their orchestra student musician are invited to post them on social media using the hashtag #GenevaCares2020. Those who are unable to hear the music can still enjoy the photos and videos at this hashtag. This ties in with Geneva High School's Virtual Spirit Week #GHSCares2020 during April 27-May 1 — each of these days encourages an act of kindness for our local community.
