The 2024-25 Preliminary Operations and Maintenance Budget was presented by Assistant Superintendent for Business Services Todd Latham which included the 2024-25 Capital Improvement Plan.
Assistant Superintendent for Learning and Teaching Shonette Sims presented the Illinois Literacy Plan and shared the results of the plan’s impact in year one.
LEGISLATIVE UPDATE
Board member Jackie Forbes gave an update and said that the Governor signed the state budget, including one bill that impacts the school districts. The bill involves testing and certification for aspiring teachers and includes the formation of a state teacher performance assessment task force.
SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
Dr. Barrett shared that although the school year has completed, there is already a lot of work being done to prepare for next year including staffing, student registration, construction projects, etc.
He updated the Board on the Strategic Plan including recent discussions with the District’s Leadership Council to begin plans for accomplishing the goals.
He talked about the Board Retreat and shared a document outlining board meeting presentation topics and planning for 2024-25.
He gave an update on the Demographic Study and said they finally received the birth data from the state of Illinois. He shared data on residential housing within the District’s boundaries that shows the percentage of households within each of the elementary schools’ boundaries that send children to District 304 schools. He shared that there have been plans presented to the City of Geneva for potential new residential developments that could impact enrollment in the District.
Dr. Barrett shared that the team is working to prepare for the Opening Day Celebration and plans to share the new mission with the District employees.
BOARD DIALOGUE TOPICS AND PENDING ACTION CONSIDERATIONS
The Board took action to approve several updates to policies except for item 3, which the committee would, along with the Board, take additional time to review. A vote will be taken on item 3 at the July meeting.
The Board designated the assistant superintendent for business services as the board treasurer and the superintendent as the board secretary.
BOARD MEMBER COMMENTS
One Board member mentioned the Policy Committee meeting and shared there will be 11 policies to review. Everyone expressed congratulations to the high school graduates. Another thanked Asst. Superintendent Shonette Simms and the Learning and Teaching Team for their work on the literacy plan. Another thanked Asst. Superintendent for Business Services Todd Latham for his team’s work on the O&M Budget. One board member said in addition to the high school graduation they attended some of the 5th grade “clap outs” at the elementary schools and said it was nice to see celebrations at various levels.
EXECUTIVE SESSION
After a closed Executive Session, the board reconvened to approve a resignation agreement and a settlement agreement.
