Return to School Information
August 13, 2021
Dear GHS Parents/Guardians and Students,
I hope you have enjoyed the summer! We are excited to begin the 2021-2022 school year! While guidelines have changed a few times in the last few weeks, the one thing that hasn’t changed is the plan to bring all students back to GHS five days per week. I know the news about having to wear masks is disappointing to some but wearing them will allow us to return to a near-normal way of doing things. There will be a Corn Boil next week, fall sports will be played, theatre productions will resume, concerts will be performed, and we’ll follow a normal schedule each day. We can’t wait to get started!
Please read the remainder of this letter for important details regarding the beginning of the school year.
Safety and Cleaning Measures
  • Students, staff, and visitors must always wear a mask while inside GHS.
  • Masks may be removed during lunch and when outdoors.
  • Protocols are in place for cleaning classrooms on a daily basis. In addition, when each student gets up from their desk at the end of the period the teacher will spray an alcohol-based sanitizing spray on the desk that will dry on its own. The cleaning products have been carefully chosen and are safe for use in our classrooms.
  • A similar process will be used in our cafeteria. Teachers supervising the cafeteria will clean the tables at the end of the lunch period when students have left the table. Our custodians will complete the second step by applying the sanitizing spray.
Morning Arrival
  • Students may enter the building through the Mack Olson Entrance or the Main Entrance.
  • For Early Bird students, the building will open at 6:35 a.m.
  • For all other students, the building will open at 7:20 a.m. Because we cannot allow students to congregate, students may not enter the building until 7:20 a.m. Please adjust your drop-off or arrival time accordingly.
  • In order to have a place for students to go before school, all classrooms will be opened, and students must report to their first-hour class when they arrive at school.
  • Bus times have been adjusted so students will arrive closer to the start of the day.
  • Bus students will enter the building through the Main Entrance.
  • During normal times students were welcome to arrive with coffee or other drinks in the morning. Because the wearing of face masks is so important, we cannot allow students to enter the building with beverages in the morning. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
  • Students will choose a seat in the cafeteria in the first couple of days that they will sit in for the remainder of the semester.  Lunch supervisors will then establish seating charts that must be maintained for contact tracing purposes.
  • Students are asked to remain at their seats unless they are disposing of garbage or using the washroom.  They will remain seated until they are dismissed at the end of the lunch period.
  • Students are entitled to one free lunch and beverage each day.  Those wishing to take advantage of this program do not need to sign up in advance.  “Grab and go” options will be available for students to pick up from the food service area at the start of their lunch period.  Additional food and drink will be available to purchase via PushCoin.
  • Students are certainly welcome to bring their own lunch from home each day.
  • If a student has a study hall in their schedule adjacent to their lunch period, they may apply for a study hall waiver. This allows a student to leave school during the study hall and lunch period. Study hall waivers are also available for 1st or 10th-period study halls. For all waivers, a student must be able to provide their own transportation, whether they drive to school or have a parent provide transportation. Students and parents cannot transport other students. Please click on the following links if you would like a waiver. Lunch Waiver Form or Study Hall Waiver Form
  • Students who live within walking distance of school may apply for a “Walk-Home” lunch waiver that allows them to leave the building during their assigned lunch period. Please click on the following link if you would like a walk-home lunch waiver. Lunch Waiver Form
Bus Transportation
  • To help our dismissal process run smoothly, please check HAC for your bus information. There you will find your bus number, what wave it is in (1st wave means it’s in the first group of buses immediately after school. 2nd wave means it will arrive to pick you up after school after the first wave has left) and what direction the bus will be facing so you can easily find it after school.
  • Students must wear their masks and remain in their assigned seats while on the school bus.
Food and Water in the Classroom
  • Eating is not allowed in the classroom unless a student has an accommodation due to a medical diagnosis and communicates the need to their teacher. Students may bring a water bottle to class. However, each of our teachers will determine whether face masks can be removed in the classroom for a drink of water.
Physical Education Class (PE)
  • We will be utilizing the PE locker rooms as students will be changing into their PE uniforms this school year.  When weather permits, PE classes will go outside for class.  When students are outside during PE, they do not have to wear their masks.
Hall Lockers
  • While lockers have been assigned to each student, we are permitting students to carry backpacks this school year.  Our hope is that this will reduce the need for students to congregate at their lockers during passing periods.
Computer Devices
  • 1:1 devices will be an integral part of your education this semester. Please bring them to school, fully charged, on the first day of school.
  • We will not be running the Thursday PLC schedule for the foreseeable future.
Symptom Screening Forms
  • Unlike last year, we will not be utilizing the symptom screening forms.  We implore that should your child not feel well on any given day, that you keep them home from school.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation with the few guidelines we still must follow due to Covid. Let’s work together and enjoy an amazing 2021-2022 school year.
