Viking Spotlight: Scott Hennig, GHS Teacher and Head Boys Basketball Coach

Scott Hennig, the Wellness Department Chair and Head Boys Basketball Coach at Geneva High School (GHS) has made significant contributions to the school community since joining the Geneva School District in November 2009.

In his role, Mr. Hennig teaches several physical education courses, including leadership principles, social issues in sports, and lifetime fitness. His dedication to student wellness extends beyond the classroom as he oversees the entire Wellness Department, which encompasses Physical Education, Health, and Driver’s Education.

Mr. Hennig’s passion for coaching is evident in his impressive track record. He has coached multiple sports at GHS, but his most notable achievement is with the Geneva Vikings Boys Varsity Basketball Team. Recently, he celebrated a milestone 150th win with the team, a testament to his leadership and coaching experience. The team was undefeated in the conference in the 2024-25 season with a stunning 26-4 record for the first time since 1963. 

Reflecting on his favorite part of his work, Mr. Hennig expressed how much he enjoys working with the students. “Geneva #304 has great students. I enjoy helping them reach their goals and working with them in class and on the basketball court,” he shares.

Outside of his professional responsibilities, Mr. Hennig values family time. “I am blessed to have three children and a fantastic wife,” he said, highlighting the importance of balance between work and personal life.

Mr. Hennig is committed to fostering a supportive and inclusive environment at GHS. He emphasizes the district’s dedication to student success in all areas—academic, social, and emotional. “We strive to create a supportive, inclusive environment where students are encouraged to grow, explore their passions, and build a strong foundation for the future,” he said.

Mr. Hennig’s contributions to GHS are a shining example of dedication to student wellness and athletic excellence. His impact on the school community continues to inspire both students and colleagues alike.

Mr. Hennig earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education and health from Aurora University, an M.A. in curriculum and instruction and leadership from North Central College and an M.S.Ed. in physical education from Northern Illinois University.
