Viking Spotlight: Laura Essex
Language arts teacher Laura Essex
Mrs. Essex is a language arts teacher at Geneva Middle School North. She joined the Geneva School District in August 2014, and she has taught 7th grade on the Blue Team ever since. “I love this age,” she said. “You can create a more relaxed environment and have fun with them.”

She chose to teach language arts because reading and language arts were always her favorite subjects when she was in school.
What she loves most about her job is the ability to get to know her students. “I like to connect with what they’re interested in and then bring that into the classroom,” she said.

In her spare time, Mrs. Essex loves to read, cook, bake, and workout. “I love to be outside playing with my two boys,” she added.

Mrs. Essex grew up in Naperville and attended Eastern Illinois University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in education. She obtained a master’s degree in educational technology and a master’s degree in reading instruction both at Aurora University.
