Western Avenue School participated
in the 21st annual Western Walks event last week. In concert with Geneva 304’s Vision for developing self-directed learners and collaborative & productive citizens, the event was organized by the school’s fifth-graders and supported by the school’s PTO and staff.
Activities included: a 1-mile walk
around the school in which 5th-graders hosted several “cheer stations” along the route; a hand-built dog house that students climbed through as they finished the walk; and an animal-themed game of Family Feud!
This is just one of many community service projects Geneva 304 students participate in throughout the year. This year’s beneficiary was Tails Humane Society, which is located in DeKalb. Students chose this organization because “we feel it’s important to take care of animals in our community!” according to the students. In addition to helping stray animals find homes, Tails helps provide food and medical support to animals including dogs, cats, hamsters, gerbils and more.
“Animals make a difference in human lives, so we want to make a difference in theirs!” the students said.
As part of this fundraiser, students
had fun finding creative ways to raise money and awareness for Tails. They
visited every classroom to teach others about how everyone can help animals.
They also organized a coin drive for the charity. Many thanks to the parents
and staff who volunteered their time and contributed to its success!
