Parents Invited to Online Safety & Digital Citizenship Forum
Online Safety Save the Date March 28 7-8 pm at Geneva High School
Jan. 29, 2020

All Geneva 304 parents are invited to Geneva High School on Thursday, March 26, for a presentation by the Geneva Police Department on online safety and digital citizenship.

The event will be held from 7-8 p.m. in the Geneva High School auditorium and is for adults only. The presentation is free, but attendees will be asked to RSVP via an online link that will be provided in early March.

Geneva Police Department Detective Sarah Sullivan, who has been educating parents for more than 10 years on this topic, will provide parents with tips and resources to protect their children, including:
  • Parental controls
  • Monitoring software
  • Cyberbullying
  • Texting dangers
  • Internet predators
  • Warning signs
It is never too early for parents to be aware of this information, Sullivan said. “We don’t want them to be blind-sided as their children get older,” she added, adding that the information is also applicable to adults in protecting their own information.

Sullivan’s biggest goal is to start a dialogue between parents and their children. “If families can just start talking about safe online behaviors, then kids can be more open with their parents later on,” she said.
