Recognition, Awards, Presentations, and Public Hearings

GHS Principal Tom Rogers presented the Tradition of Excellence Award to the following GHS students:  

IHSA Girls Gymnastics: 2 gymnasts qualified to compete at the IHSA Gymnastics Meet on Saturday, February 17th at Palatine High School in Palatine, IL. The team is coached by Kim Hostman. Pictured at left: Reese Lackey and Brooke Lussnig

IMEA Conference Participants: Three GHS All-State musicians attended the Illinois Music Education Conference (IMEC). The conference took place in Peoria, IL from Wednesday, January 24-Saturday, January 27. National Merit Scholar Finalists: Three GHS seniors were named as finalists in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Program: Jared Walter and Mason Wiedow (Not pictured: Jack Riviere)

Several members of the Learning and Teaching Department including Assistant Superintendent of Learning and Teaching Shonette Sims, Director of Learning and Teaching George Petmezas, Mill Creek Elementary School Principal Tim Wyller, and Instructional Facilitator Anne Hallahan gave a presentation on the Elementary Literacy-Spelling program called Really Great Reading. Students from Mill Creek Elementary School helped with the presentation along with First Grade Teachers Mrs. Dabkowski, Mrs. Francis, and Mrs. Bruno; plus Williamsburg Elementary School Fourth Grade Teacher Ms. Buchman and Mill Creek Elementary School 5th Grade Teacher Mrs. Stajduhar. Dr. Brian Harris of HYA (Hazard, Young, Attea) and Associates presented the Strategic Planning Engagement ReportĀ as part of the Strategic Planning Process. The next step is Phase 3: Focus on the Future. A presentation of the final draft of the Strategic Plan will be made at the May 13 Board of Education meeting. View the presentation.

Legislative Update

Board Member Jackie Forbes shared that there isn’t much yet to report on, but she is watching the progress of bills as they move through committees.

Superintendent's Report

Dr. Barrett reported on upcoming professional development scheduled on Countywide Teachers Institute Day on Friday, March 1. Teachers at all levels across the District will participate in professional development.  

He gave an update on the Demographic Study. He said that data collection is already underway with the collection of two key pieces of data needed for the study: data from the Kane County Geographic Information System and the Illinois Department of Public Health birth data.  

Finally, he shared that additional BOE presentations are planned for the future and will be added to the Board Discussion Calendar so that board members can see what is planned.
 

Board Dialogue Topics  

The Board heard from Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Todd Latham about a proposed update to the bus fleet management plan.  

Board Member Comments

One Board member said they volunteered at the high school Winter Semi-Formal and congratulated the staff on a successful event. Two members commented on a PTO meeting at GMSN that they attended and commented on the collaboration and preparation being done to prepare for the end of the school year. They also said they attended a potluck supper for the World Language program where students were honored and performed, and they commended the World Language Department for the work that they do. Another member said they attended the Theater Boosters meeting where members are preparing for the performance of Mama Mia at the high school in April. They said the Facilities Task Force met to prepare for summer projects. They thanked the Burgess-Norton company for their donation to the GHS Robotics Team. Another member congratulated the students who won the Tradition of Excellence awards and thanked the students who shared what they are learning in school with the new reading program. Two members also commented on the reading presentation and commended the new program.
