Amy VanWagenen joined the Geneva School District in May 2013 and has since become the head coach for the Geneva High School Dance Team. The team achieved a remarkable milestone this year by winning first place in the state competition. This is the 10th year in a row that the Dance Team has brought home a sectional championship and 11th in the past 12 years, under her leadership.
When she is not coaching, she dedicates her time as a full-time kindergarten teacher for the Kaneland School District.
She graduated with honors from Iowa State University with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, where she was a member of the competitive dance team for four years. Dance has always held a special place in her heart, and sharing her love for the sport with the next generation is incredibly fulfilling.
Ms. VanWagenen expresses a deep affection for her dancers. “I absolutely love the kids on the team,” she said. “I have been very lucky to watch these dancers grow into incredible adults throughout their time on the team and still keep up with many of them in their adult lives.”
In her spare time, she enjoys traveling. She finds relaxation and energy in exploring new places and has visited over half of the National Parks and traveled to eight different countries. “I love to travel! Going anywhere and everywhere is what relaxes me and energizes me at the same time. Up next, Italy over Spring Break!” she shared enthusiastically.
“I hope parents and the community know how wonderful the kids are in this district,” she said. “No one can do it alone and getting to be a part of this well-oiled machine that is the GHS Dance Team is special and definitely not something I ever take for granted!”
