The Transportation Department consists of 69 buses that transport just over 5,100 students to and from school daily. The Department employs 67 drivers and 6 monitors to cover 233 routes per day. During the 2024-2025 school year, the Department drove 654,191 miles to and from school and curriculum-related field trips. An additional 27,569 miles were driven on athletic trips.

The responsibilities of the Transportation Department include but are not limited to: 
  • Develop bus routes and student route assignments
  • Safely and reliably transport students to and from school
  • Safely and reliably transport students for athletics, extra-curricular activities and field trips

(0:00) My name is David Dervy. I'm one of over 70 bus drivers for school district 304. We're currently at the transportation facility.

(0:10) Every one of our bus drivers are concerned about the safety of your child. Every morning for the federal government, we're required to fill out a pre-bus inspection form. There's over 75 items on this form that we have to check before we leave the yard. 

(0:26) For example, we make sure that every single emergency exit operates properly, latches and closes securely. Not only the four windows, but the roof hatches and the rear exit door. The bus will not start. I cannot leave the yard without that door being unlocked because there's a safety measure to it.

(0:48) I will then check the floor mat to make sure there's nothing that can cause a tripping hazard and that the seats are all sound and secure and the handrail is in place so they can easily enter the bus.

(1:02) After checking the interior of the bus, I will sit in the driver's seat, make sure that every single component on the bus is operating properly. I will activate every switch to make sure things are functioning and that my gauges are all working properly and I have a full tank of fuel for today's trip.

(1:21) As I continue around the bus, I'll make sure that my stop arms both come out, operate properly, and the lights are being illuminated on those. I will look then inside through the battery compartment. Make sure the batteries are secure and that there's nothing within the fuse panel cabinet. Make sure that everything's good and operating properly there.

(1:45) As I come around to the front of the bus, I'll check each and every mirror to make sure that it's clean, not cracked, broken, or damaged, and it is adjusted properly for today's trip. I'll also make sure that my gate, my safety gate is operating functioning properly so that when the children exit the bus, they do not walk right in front of the bus so I can easily see them ahead of me.

(2:10) At every student stop or pickup, when I'm ready to proceed on with my journey and I put the bus in drive, the last thing and most important thing I do is check these crossover mirrors to make sure that your child is not in front of the bus.

(2:25) While doing my pre-inspection in the morning, if any item is wrong or not operating properly on this bus, it has to be down. And I will then proceed to take another bus from our spares. We have approximately 80 buses and I believe there's 8 to 10 that are available for backup.

Recent news stories have served as an important reminder that the areas around a school bus require everyone's attention. Whether you are a student, parent, bus driver, or motorist, every safety decision matters. We ask families to help reinforce safe behaviors around the school bus, particularly when boarding, exiting, or crossing near the bus.

Drop Off/Pick Up Line Safety

Significant hazards can be present where pedestrians, vehicles, and buses are in close proximity.  We encourage all of our visitors and families to strictly follow all the rules of the road not only on the way to school, but also when navigating through the parking lots on school property.   While speeds are often slower, the low speeds do not eliminate risk and the potential for danger still exists. Learn more about how to protect students in the Drop Off/Pick Up Lane.

The District is now hiring bus drivers and bus monitors. Bus monitors assist bus drivers if a student on the bus needs additional support. Bus monitors allow bus drivers to focus on driving.
