GHS Places 5th Nationally in Student Television Competition

Over spring break, 18 GHS students traveled to San Diego to compete in the Student Television Network (STN) annual convention. At home, the students are part of GTV, GHS’ student-run broadcasting network, a program that supports and encourages scholastic broadcasting. GTV sponsor Jason Santo says the students worked tirelessly over several months to prepare for two team and 15 individual competitions.

The GTV news team placed 5th in the nation in the Crazy 8 competition, which requires students to shoot, edit, and anchor a newscast all in 8 hours. “GHS has never placed in this competition, and to finish in the top 5 was an amazing feat,” said Santo.

Two students also placed in individual competitions. Freshman Katelyn Keenehan finished 5th in the Live Reporting Competition and Sophmore Jack Billek placed 5th in the Convention Recap Competition. “Jack spent the entire day in front of his computer editing his piece and Katelyn had to talk about collaboration between the United States and Russian television teachers,” Santo said. “This is really impressive work from such young students.”

The news team (above) is comprised of Taylor Boser (senior), Garrett Otto (junior), Jack Billek (soph), Noah Touchette (soph), Natalie Carberry (junior), Sam Wiesenth (soph), Kam Kaba (soph), Kat Pronenko (junior), and Katelyn Keenehan (freshman).
