School Closings and Late Starts

About School Closings

There are several mediums through which Geneva School District will advertise late starts or school closings.

If schools close or a late start implemented, the legal guardians of all students will be notified through use of Geneva School District’s emergency notification system. The system will call the guardian’s primary and mobile phone numbers and send a message to the guardian’s email address, provided that current phone and email information is on file in the District’s student information database.

In addition, school closing and late start notifications will be tweeted to the District’s @Geneva304 Twitter account followers, posted on Geneva School District’s website and emailed to all 304 Connects subscribers. Families may also call the District’s Administrative Offices – (630) 463-3001 – to hear a recorded telephone message concerning school closings and late starts.

This information is also reported to the Emergency Closing Center, which broadcasts the information on the following Chicago stations: WGN-AM (720), WBBM-AM (780), and CBS-TV (2), NBC-TV (5), ABC-TV (7), WGN-TV (9), FOX-TV, and CLTV cable.

Every effort is made to make a decision regarding school closures by 6 a.m.  In the event that a late start is utilized, please be aware that there is still a possibility that school will be cancelled if conditions do not improve. Every effort will be made to make this decision by 7 a.m., and parents and students are encouraged to continue to monitor the District’s website and local television/radio stations for updates.

Emergency Days

In the event that an Emergency Day is called, school would be canceled for the day and made up at the end of the year.

E-Learning Days

In 2020, Geneva 304 adopted a new E-Learning Plan in accordance with Public Act 101-0012 of the School Code, which allows school districts to utilize E-Learning Days in lieu of Emergency Days (such as in the event of inclement weather).

The use of E-Learning Days is designed to avoid interruptions in instruction that occur when school cannot be held districtwide. If Geneva 304 plans to use an E-Learning Day, K-12 students would be expected to learn remotely by logging into their 1:1 devices and participating in learning opportunities throughout the day. Attendance would be taken remotely. It is important for this reason that students bring home their 1:1 devices on a daily basis. Geneva Early Learning Program preschool students would engage in remote learning through Seesaw. Additional details would be provided by your child's school.

Under this plan, Geneva 304 will maintain the option to make up inclement weather/Emergency Days at the end of the year, and/or implement an E-Learning Day, which serves as an attendance day on our school calendar. The Geneva 304 2020-23 E-Learning Plan can be found at this link.
