The Skaldic

A skald was an ancient Scandinavian poet of the Viking period.  The Skaldic is an award-winning literary magazine comprised of original writing and artwork by GHS students.  The magazine is designed and produced by the Literary Magazine club.

Pacemaker Award

Honoring the nation’s best, National Scholastic Press Association annually awards the prestigious Pacemaker award to the best high school publications in the nation.  The NSPA Pacemaker is one of the oldest and most prestigious awards for scholastic journalism, founded in 1921, and is the association's preeminent national award.  Twenty finalists were chosen from across the country and 6 magazines overall received the Pacemaker. In 2021, Geneva High School received the top honor.

Skaldic Submissions

Submission Categories

  • Written: poety, short fiction (not to exceed 10 pages, double-spaced in 12 point font), drama, personal/critical essays, editorials, letters to editor, interviews, descriptive sketch, slam poetry
  • Visual:  art photography (at least 300 DPI), photo manipulation, ceramics, origami, graphic design,3D design, animation
  • Auditory: original sheet music, original recordings 

Submission Guidelines 

  • Submissions should be done through the Skaldic Website under the submissions section.
  • If there is a problem with the submissions tab, you can send an attachment in an email to [email protected].
  • Your STUDENT EMAIL must be used for your submisstion to be considered. 
  • Submitted work should be carefully edited into a final, best form in order to be considered.
  • There is no limit on submissions, so send in as many pieces as you would like. 
  • All submissions are reviewed until February 1st.  Any submissions received after that date will be considered for next year's issue.
  • Students will be notified of admission status no later than April 15th.
