Interested in a career in Business? Whether your plan is to pursue accounting, finance, sales, marketing, management or more the classes listed below will introduce new business topics & prepare you for the workforce or get a head start on college course work.

 

ENTREPRENEURSHIP

In this course, students will develop effective communication skills to help foster cooperation, productivity and teamwork within an entrepreneurial business environment. This course will also provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to own and operate their own business and become successful entrepreneurs, as students will learn about self-employment, social entrepreneurship, business, ethics and basic economic concepts related to small businesses. Students will walk through the steps of setting up a business, including developing a business model, a mission and a vision, attracting investors, and marketing a company.

 

BUSINESS & MANAGEMENT

Business & Management is an introductory course for students considering further study in the business program at Geneva High School. The course includes an examination of economic systems, business organization, and business concepts. Business communications and computations are integrated and emphasized throughout the course. Specific business principles that are addressed: a) understanding basic business and economic principles, b) identifying types and classifications of business organizations, c) organizing and using financial data, d) contrasting management theories, e) understanding the composition of the marketing mix, f) demonstrating an understanding of business administration, and g) applying production data for decision making. Students learn to recognize the role of business in the modified-free enterprise system. They will identify the general responsibilities of employees and learn the planning process needed to open a business. Through career planning activities, the student learns to investigate occupational opportunities and educational qualifications, to use career information resources, and to develop skills for finding employment.

 

PERSONAL FINANCE

Personal Finance is a required course for graduation. This course is designed to help students make important personal financial and economic decisions with assurance and competence. The student will learn basic economic concepts related to his/her role as consumer, producer and citizen. There is an emphasis on such topics as budgeting, comparison shopping, credit, installment buying, consumer taxes, saving and investing, and insurance. Students practice applications necessary for every day, consumer living decisions.

BLENDED PERSONAL FINANCE

This course will cover the same curricular topics as the traditional version of the course, but in a different, more flexible manner. In this course, many of the activities will be highly-collaborative, technology-driven, and student-centered with some element of student control over the place, path, or pace of learning. There will be days devoted to working in collaborative student groups or individually on projects and assignments for the course. Students might work in the classroom, library, cafeteria, or commons, and may work directly with the teacher, individually, or with a student group depending on the nature of the assignment. While this is not an online course, many of the activities may be completed online. Students should reflect on their ability to manage their time, be self-motivated, ask questions when needed, and navigate in an electronic learning environment prior to enrolling in this course.

 

ONLINE PERSONAL FINANCE

This course will cover the same curricular topics as the traditional version of the course, but in a fully online format. As a fully online class, students are expected to complete their work outside of the traditional school day. This course will not appear on the normal period 1-10 schedule. An in-person class session may be required at the beginning of the semester. Additionally this course cannot be taken as a ninth class in a semester (A full course load plus Early Bird PE plus Online Personal Finance).

 

ACCOUNTING PRINCIPLES

Course Fee: ~$30.00 Are you considering a college degree in accounting or business? This semester course is highly recommended for all students considering a business major in college. Students will learn basic accounting concepts, accounting cycle, double-entry accounting, basic financial statements, and cash controls, and explore accounting careers. The general journal, sales journal, and cash receipts journals are used, and accounting computer applications are integrated throughout the course. Students also complete practice sets with business papers emphasizing actual business records management. This course covers approximately one-third of the first semester financial accounting class at the college level.

 

ADVANCED ACCOUNTING

The second course in the accounting sequence is designed for students who wish to prepare for a career in accounting or in a related business field. During this semester, students learn to use the purchases and cash payments journals, accounting procedures for payroll, inventories and depreciation, and how these apply to merchandising organizations, partnerships and corporations. Students learn how to analyze financial records to provide assistance to management for decision making, and for personal use. Business ethics, case studies, and career exploration are included in the coursework.

 

MARKETING

Find out about this exciting career field utilizing themes of Sports and Entertainment, Food Marketing and more. You will learn about the marketing concepts of selling, research, new product development, pricing, advertising and sales promotion. This course uses many project-based assignments that will give you hands-on experience as you research, create, price and promote your own product or service concept. Students will also explore economic concepts and examine how they can impact the changing role of marketing in our private enterprise system. This class can also help prepare interested students for DECA competitions, an optional extra-curricular club activity.

 

ADVANCED MARKETING: SPORTS & ENTERTAINMENT

Prerequisite: Marketing

Grades: 10,11,12

Building on the foundations of Marketing, this course continues the exploration of real world applications in the sports and entertainment environment.   Emphasis will be placed on marketing research, the personal selling process, and the roll of advertising in event planning, including the use of social media.

 

BUSINESS AND PERSONAL LAW

This course gives students an understanding of their basic legal rights and responsibilities. It stresses the principles of law that are most meaningful to them as citizens, workers, and consumers. The curriculum includes the development of the American legal system, the legal processes, and implications for various business and personal transactions including a unit on contracts. Students will learn how to apply fundamental decision-making skills to common legal situations.

 

INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS

This course is designed to help students prepare for work in a global economy. Students will gain an understanding of cultural and social influences, international communications, international trade, government and legal influences, currency and risk management, production and quality control, accounting and financing practices, and human resource management. Students will also explore international careers, as well as diversity in the American workplace.

 

VIRTUAL ENTERPRISES INTERNATIONAL (VEI) 

Credit: .5 - .5

Prerequisite: 3 Business Courses

Grades: 11, 12

Course Fee: ~$20.00

This full-year capstone course provides a simulated business environment in which students create and manage a virtual company, conducting business with other “firms” nationally and internationally. Students are involved in every aspect of running the business, through the application of human resources, accounting, product development, production, distribution, marketing and sales. In the simulated business environment, students belong to a specific department depending on skills learned in prerequisite courses, prior knowledge, and personal interest. Leadership opportunities within the firm provide further relevant experience. The program enables participants to experience careers, acquire global economic knowledge, develop interpersonal and organizational skills, utilize technology as applied in business, and gain a clear understanding of how employees work together to meet the goals of the company while at the same time conveying the professional expectations of the workplace. This course may be repeated once for credit. Students repeating this course must be involved in a different role the second time. Students will be notified if a course application is required. 

 

VIRTUAL ENTERPRISES INTERNATIONAL (VEI) HONORS
